This week the Purple Pod showed particular interest in the story of the Disgusting Sandwich. To support and extend this story further we decided to follow the steps within the story to create our very own Disgusting Sandwich. We all agreed with the badger in the story that our sandwich was too disgusting to eat. Luckily for us the lovely dinner ladies made us some toast and cheese for our snack which was delicious and definitely not disgusting. Our favourite character within the story was the very hungry badger. We used paint and paper plates to create badger masks. When wearing our masks we were able to take on the role of the badger and pretend to look for the sandwich around the nursery. Towards the end of the week we explored bonfire night and firework safety. We used glitter and paint to create firework artwork and watched a cartoon called Francis Firefly. This taught us all about the importance of keeping safe around bonfires and fireworks.

This week in the Blue Pod we’ve had great fun learning about fireworks and how to keep ourselves safe around them. The children used their bodies in the MUGA pitch to become fireworks e.g. spinning to become Catherine wheels. We’ve had black playdough with glitter to look like the night sky and in the water tray we’ve had glitter to look like exploding fireworks too. The children have used lots of appropriate language about fireworks and learned some new vocabulary too. This week we have explored shapes and where we see them around the pod. We used felt shapes to make rocket fireworks and one of the children taught the group the shape hexagon. As we continue to look at nursery rhymes, we practised Humpty Dumpty. The children enjoyed making a display for our book area and recognised some shapes we used to make Humpty Dumpty.

This week the Red Pod have explored fireworks. We used tweezers, syringes, marbles, slime, playdough and threading to manipulate and develop our fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. We have extended our vocabulary, learning new words to describe the sounds, colours and sights of fireworks. We mixed glitter and glue to make fireworks in the night sky pictures and mixed ingredients together to make slime. We watched and listened to a fireworks display and bonfire on CBBC. We made our own fireworks display in a glass jar using oil and food colouring to show fireworks dancing in water. We have also spent time in the nursery garden exploring the loose parts using a bench as a slide.

This week the Yellow Pod have been extremely busy experimenting with firework activities to explore our senses. We have made firework pictures with colourful collage materials - mixed, poured and used droppers in the glittery water tray demonstrating touch. With shaving foam and food colouring we mixed colours together to demonstrate fireworks, exploring touch and smell. We used bicarbonate of soda, glitter and vinegar to make fizzy fireworks. After hearing the sound fireworks make on the iPad we used oil and food colouring to show fireworks dancing in water using our sight. For snack, we used our taste to decorate and eat firework biscuits with icing sugar and colourful sprinkles.

This week in the Green Pod we have been exploring bonfire night and people who can help us in the event of an emergency. We have used collage material to create bonfire pictures and a variety of different media to create our fireworks including rockets and Catherine wheels. We also used paint to create pictures of fireworks exploding in the sky and bonfires. We have discussed how bonfires and fireworks can be dangerous and learned about the people who can help us such as the fire service, ambulance and police. We know how we can contact them in the event of an emergency.
