Primary one have been exploring colour mixing and how wax changes when it is heated and cooled.

First we discussed the experiments and made predictions about what they thought would happen.

'I think it's going to pop and fizz.' Jackson

'I think the red and blue will get mixed up and make a purple.' Lily

'I think that it will go like a rainbow.' Ruby

After the predictions were noted we completed to experiments. The first using paper towels and food colouring. We watched carefully as the coloured water went up the paper towel. Then we put both ends of the paper towel in different coloured water and watched as both colours went up the towel and then met in the middle where they mixed.

The second experiment was to explore the properties of wax and how it changes when heated.

First we crushed up the crayons in bags until they were like crumbs.
Next we placed the crumbs onto paper and covered it with greaseproof paper and secured it with paper clips.
Then we heated it using a hairdryer and watched the wax melt and change into a liquid.
Finally we mixed the melted wax with a cocktail stick to mix the colours together.

'Wow, that's so cool!' Evan

'It is easy to mix now.' Hannah

'It has gone all hard again now it has gone colder.' Ollie

The properties of wax were explored further when we created wax resist fish pictures. Primary 1 used wax crayons to draw colourful fish and discovered that the wax resisted water when they tried to paint over it with watered down blue paint.

'It is not staying in the bit I drew.' Ethan

'I can still see my fish even when I paint over it.' Katie
